From werewolves to lighthouses, 'I voted' stickers are suddenly cool in Michigan

Oct 19, 2024

LANSING — Boring "I voted" stickers aren't as prevalent this year in Michigan, after Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson sought new designs from Michigan residents.

In are designs from artists of all ages and ranging from a werewolf to a lighthouse scene to a deer with sunglasses.

The new stickers, nine in all, weren't available in time to go out with mailed ballots in Lansing, but voters who show up to vote early will have the best chance at the sometimes-limited stock of special stickers, said Chris Swope, Lansing's city clerk and the overseer of city elections.

Local clerks around the state could order specific stickers, or a variety. Swope's office decided to order all nine.

Swope said there's not a particularly strong trend toward any of the stickers in his office, "though there is some preference for the werewolf" design.

The mother of one of the winners, local elementary student Katelyn Stouffer-Hopkins, works in the Lansing clerk's office, so there is an in-house preference for that sticker, featuring a voter and the words "I'm cool I voted," Swope said.

The city has had more than half of its absentee ballots returned, about 54%53.5% of the 23,278 absentee ballots issued, according to figures Swipe shared Thursday.
