NYT Connections players have admitted that they were 'slaughtered' by October 17's puzzle - but were you able to solve it?

The game has soared in popularity in recent months, and every day, thousands across the globe log on to put their skills to the test to solve the difficult word puzzle.

It sees people attempt to divide 16 words into four groups that share some sort of connection.

But many times, the creators purposely use terms that have other connections in an attempt to stump players.

And on Thursday, numerous people on the web admitted that they had a hard time figuring out the answers because they had fallen victim to the tricks.

Reddit was flooded with angry posts about the puzzle afterwards, with one player branding it as 'awful' and another calling it 'bulls**t.'

The four categories for Thursday's words were: grassy area, deal with, movies with 'S' removed, and ___ law.

The first group contained different ways to describe a grassy area, including green, lawn, park, and yard.

The second was made up of various synonyms for 'deal with,' like address, answer, field, and handle.

The third category in Thursday's puzzle had four movie names but with the letter S removed - including Car, Goodfella, Jaw, and Swinger - while the final group was made up of words that can have the term 'law' added at the end, like criminal, Harvard, lemon, and natural.

But many social media users weren't able to solve it, and they took to Reddit to share their frustrations.

Some confessed that they had never heard of some of the answers, while others said they had fallen for the 'red herrings.'

'I'd not heard of Swingers nor lemon law,' one person wrote.

'I literally tried every possible choice of the five words, except for the correct one,' another frustrated player added.

'[The first category] was just awful today. And I still have no idea what the [second] means,' scathed someone else.

'The "we stole a letter" categories drive me bonkers,' read a fourth comment.

'It's like playing against a villain from a preschool educational TV show that swipes the letter of the day every episode.'

'Looks like a slaughter today in the comments,' a fifth said.

'The without a letter one was f**king bulls**t,' a different user commented.

'The red herring had its way with me,' confessed someone else.

Connections, which launched last year, is the New York Times' second most popular game behind Wordle.

Everdeen Mason, the editorial director of the Times’s Games section, told Vox earlier this year that she was unbothered by 'cranky' players who get frustrated with how difficult it is.

'My job here is to trick you,' she confessed at the time.
