Texas restaurants offering freebies, deals for 'I voted' stickers
Are you voting in the U.S. general election? The civic duty has more perks beyond its role in democracy. In case you need another reason to visit the polls (we won't judge), some Texas eateries are offering food deals.
It's against the law to give rewards of any kind for voting when federal candidates are on the ballot. Such "giveaways" have been made illegal by the Federal Election Commission since 1948. Ben & Jerry's, Starbucks and Krispy Kreme were forced to adjust their promotions during the 2008 election, according to Eater.
Despite this law, several brands throughout the country have found loopholes. First, smaller and/or local businesses have lower chances of being noticed by the federal government and, therefore, are unlikely to face repercussions. Regardless, other eateries have skirted the law by simply changing the wording used in relation to their giveaways. Several advertise deals for those "wearing a sticker." By leaving out the implied sticker type — the "I Voted" sticker — these businesses avoid penalties.
So, which eateries offer deals to those "wearing a sticker"? Here's a list.
